Today I realized that we only have 13 lessons left…I am almost crying when I am thinking of not teaching you anymore!

Writing, grammar and #weddingtrip

At the moment we are very busy. We are writing an essay and also finishing our #weddingtrip project. That is not all! At home we are watching films about grammar so that we know everything (!) before our National Test that we soon are having.

In a week or two you will be able to watch the films we have made from our #weddingtrip project. Since all the pupils in year 9 are working together only one lesson a week it takes a lot of time.

Pocahontas & the Powhatan Indians – Skype in the Classroom

Another great English lesson! We have met the crew from Virginia Historical Society and they told us about Pocahontas and the Powhatan Indians. We learned a lot! Did you know that Pocahontas didn’t look like she does in the movie? We saw a portrait of her and it was not at all the same!

We also learned that a reservation is like a ”society within the society”. Some of the reservations have their own laws and their own governments, but they can still vote for the President.

Skype in the classroom

As you know by now, we have read a book about Indians. We wanted to learn more about Indians and our teacher found a guest speaker through Skype in the classroom: Virignia Historical Society.

On Friday we are going to ”meet” Mr Evan Liddiard and his colleagues. They are going to talk about Indians -Pocahontas and the Powhatan Indians with us. They have also read The True Diary of a Part-Time Indian and will talk about it.

We got this word-list from Mr Liddiard and before the Skype lesson we need to take a look at the words below:

Selected Vocabulary
These words may be used in the HistoryConnects program on Pocahontas and the Powhatan Indians:
Archaeology– the systematic recovery, by scientific methods, of material evidence remaining from the past. These artifacts or materials are traces of human culture, technology, and behavior and may hold clues about the inhabitants of a particular site.
Algonquian– one of the three Indian language groups in Virginia, spoken primarily in the Coastal Plain (Tidewater) region (ex. Powhatan Indians)
Siouan– one of the three Indian language groups in Virginia, spoken primarily in the Piedmont region (ex. Monacan Indians)
Iroquoian– one of the three Indian language groups in Virginia, spoken primarily in Southwestern Virginia (ex. Cherokee Indians)
Powhatan– refers either to the leader of the largest group of Algonquian speaking Indians in Virginia (Wahunsonacock), or to the members of the roughly thirty-two chiefdoms organized and led by him
Yehakin– Algonquian word for longhouse, the traditional long, communal dwelling of the Powhatan Indians
“Three Sisters”– corn, beans, and squash
Hominy– Algonquian word for corn
Valley and Ridge– Includes the Great Valley of Virginia and other valleys separated by ridges. (The Blue Ridge Mountains and the Valley and Ridge regions are part of the Appalachian mountain system.) Located west of Blue Ridge Mountains
Blue Ridge– Old, rounded mountains that are a part of the Appalachian mountain system. Located between the Piedmont and the Valley and Ridge regions, this region is the source of many rivers
Appalachian Plateau- (plateau: Area of elevated land that is flat on top), located in Southwest Virginia; only a small part of the plateau is located in Virginia.
Fall Line– The natural border between the Coastal Plain (Tidewater) and the Piedmont regions, where waterfalls prevent further travel on the river
Piedmont– (land at the foot of mountains), characterized by rolling hills, located west of the Fall Line
Tidewater- also known as the Coastal Plain, characterized by flat land and located near the Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay (including the Eastern Shore); east of the Fall Line
Sinew– A piece of tough fibrous tissue uniting muscle to bone or bone to bone; a tendon or ligament.
Culture– The arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively.
Artifact– An object made by a human being, typically an item of cultural or historical interest
Replica– An exact copy or model of something

To this day… for the bullied and beautiful

Yesterday Niklas in 9B showed us this TedTalk and told us to watch it.

Niklas thought that this video told the world exactly what we are trying to tell the world with our blog.

We took 12 minutes of our lives and watched it. Afterwards it was dead silent. Some of us were crying…

Please, spend 12 minutes of your life and think of the message of this TedTalk.

Discuss it with your classes, kids and friends.

#trueFurutorpRomance

Last week we got married! Yes! It is true – we are now married! Well, not actually we, but our characters. We work together with the other year 9 classes and we speed dated before we chose who we wanted to marry. Our teachers acted matchmakers and decided who would marry who.

Our teachers had tried to make the classroom look like a church! There was an aisle and on the ”altar” there were candles burning. They also played love songs.

We were sooo surprised when we realised that Claes, another teacher at the school, showed up in the classroom and PROPOSED to Sara. They walked up the aisle and got married! He even kissed the bride!! We were cheering and clapping. It was great fun.

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian

On Mondays we are working with the other classes, but on Fridays we will be on our own. We will be reading The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian. The picture is from the book and made by Ellen Forney.

On page 16 there is a quote:

Speed dating

We are now working on a project where all the students in grade 9 are working together. We have created characters and during next week the characters will speed date each other!

We will then fall in love (!) in one of the partners we have chosen and get married! Our honeymoon will be documented through pictures and films. We can travel to an English speaking country and there we have to visit three famous places!

Once a week you will be working together with the other classes – 9A and 9B. On Fridays we will work with our own project.

This is the #weddingtrip intro and how you are going to work with it:

The Wedding Trip – a project with 9A, 9B and 9C. 


(We have used free pictures and private pictures. The movie is made in Animoto.)

You have now found a partner that you love and the wedding was yesterday!

Today you are going on your honeymoon, but first you need to plan where you are going. You need to document your trip. Use pictures and film! You can use the computer, iPad and/or your phone.


Dead- line: 9th of March

 

What to do!


  1. You have to visit an English speaking country.

– Shortly describe the country you have chosen.

  1. You have to visit three famous places in that country.

– Describe the places. Why is it a famous place? What will you and your partner do when you visit it?

 

  1. You have to participate in three activities that are typical of your country. For example: If you go to England you have an afternoon tea, if you go to the USA you watch baseball…

 

  1. If you want to you can choose “your song”! Do you have a love song that means something special to you? Motivate why!

 

How you do it!


You can choose between making a film or a photo album. You present your film/photo album for Sara, Maria and Marie. You don’t have to show everyone. You need to write a manuscript and also be able to present your film/photo album orally. (If you choose film you speak in the film and only need to introduce what you have done.)

Focus on your language – pronunciation and writing- and not on which app you would like to use. (Check out Schoolsoft for the knowledge requirements linked to this project.)

 

Choose one of the tasks:

Make a film – write a manuscript.

Remember it is a film from your wedding trip! Make sure we understand where you are, what you are doing and what you think about it!    (You don’t have to document your wedding night!)

Make your own photo album.

Include pictures and text. Make sure we understand where you are, what you are doing and what you think about it.

 

Programs and apps that you can use:

Use Google Document when you write your manuscript. You need your Google account. Remember to share your document with your partner.

www.storyjumper.com  – to create photo albums

www.animoto.com or the app  – to create photo albums

www.magisto.com or the app –  to create photo albums

Google Presentations – you can share your presentations with your partner which means that you can continue working if your partner is ill.

PowerPoint – you can share your presentations

Book Creator – an app where you can create your own book: add film, pictures and text.

Let’s explore the world…

We will participate in a Mystery Skype lesson.

You don’t know where in the world the other class will be!

You have to ask Yes and No questions and the class that first finds out where the other class is will win.

I have told the other teacher that the closest town (Hässleholm) will be fine. Otherwise they won’t have a chance…is Vinslöv actually on a map? !
